Beamhook menubar is a tiny, magical menu bar app designed for macOS that solves one of the most persistent frustrations for Mac users: unpredictable media keys. Developed by Olli Pikkarainen, this utility allows you to permanently hook your keyboard's play/pause, next, previous, and optionally volume keys to a specific application of your choice.

Instead of yielding to whichever media player macOS arbitrarily decides to remember last—whether that's a random browser tab, a background video, or a music streaming app like Spotify—Beamhook menubar gives you absolute control, ensuring your media keys always target the exact app you want them to.

Pros of Beamhook menubar

Makes Mac media keys completely predictable by locking them to a designated app
Controls play/pause, next, previous, and optionally volume commands
Lightweight menu bar app design that stays out of your way
Open-source availability with a GitHub link for developers and users

Cons of Beamhook menubar

Limited to macOS functionality and menu bar usage
Relies entirely on macOS media key handling replacement
